Not Hannah

The name "Nandita" means happy, but ironically I haven't always been too happy about having this name. I don't know if it was the multiple variations of pronunciations that I heard or if it just didn't have a ring to it. I used to think it was a compliment when I heard of another girl named Nandita because that meant it was more common. At this moment I think my name is pretty cool😎. But boy oh boy was there a journey to get here. Here's a little story time!

It was probably around first grade when I started having a fascination for the name Hannah. It was a pretty big running joke in my family second to the "I found you in Walmart when you were little and bought you" one. By the way, is this just normal in Desi families or is it strange? Anyways, after a while of my parents teasing me about wanting my name to be Hannah, I actually deemed it to be a pretty good idea. I went from thinking it was a sweet name to GENUINELY wanting it on my birth certificate. I'm still not quite sure why I liked that name so much. Maybe it was the fact that it was a very common American name, that my fellow Girl Scouts had nice basic names like "Alyssa" and "Maddie" and I also wanted one like that, or maybe I liked that it had two of the same letter next to each other (ya I had weird reasoning when I was a kid). I eventually got over that phase somehow and came to appreciate how beautiful and unique my name and the meaning behind it is.

And yes, a decade later my family still jokes about this phase of mine.

While I am writing about names, this might be a good idea to explain the name in my blogs title. "Nan" is a nickname that stems from Nandita, but that is probably already self explanatory. A few people used to call me "Nan" because they felt weird calling me Nandita and wanted a nickname for me. Those few have now turned into almost all my friends calling me Nan, and I have become used to hearing my friends yelling that to me from across the hallway.

I think the idea of having names and the abundance of different ones in the world is super exciting, and I am happy to love mine.

That's a wrap for this week's blog!
